Gigi Lai is the grand-daughter of the famous Lai Man-Wai. Lai Man-Wai was one of the first generation filmmakers and has been nick named "Father of Hong Kong Cinema". However, Gigi's family went bankrupt and at the age of 14 she entered the entertainment industry to support her entire family.

Gigi is nicknamed "Goddess of Beauty" due to the selective nature in which she would pick her roles. If a role would affect her appearance on screen, Gigi would turn down those roles.
